History

In 1995 (2538 BE), the group of seventh surgeons: Dr. Ravi Phimolsarnti, Dr. Prasert Trairatvorakul, Dr. Seree Senaratana, Dr. Kamthorn SukPhanPhotharam, Dr. Sorasak Srisaowachat, Dr. Chaiwat Khunanuson and Dr. Pramook Mutirangura, who travelled to Montreal, Canada to participate in the International Phlebology conference, sponsored by Servier company.

After the conference, They discussed the formation of the vascular society in Thailand. It was the meeting that the first vascular society was established, leading to the birth of the Thai Vascular Association (TVA) and aiming to foster future academic collaboration.

In 1998 (2539BE), the Thai Vascular Society was successfully accomplished. The society was formed with the following committee members:

The mission of the Thai Vascular Society in its early stages included organizing interhospital conferences every three months. Each training hospital in the field of surgery took turns hosting these academic conferences. In addition, during the annual meeting of the Royal College of Surgeons of Thailand, the society also conducted membership applications. The membership fee for regular members was 200 THB/Year or a lifetime membership fee of 2,000 THB.

The management of the Thai Vascular Society has conducted executive committee elections every two years. The following is a list of the society’s presidents and chairpersons from the past until the present:

In 2001 (2547 BE), there was a change in the status of the Thai Vascular Society, which transformed into the Thai Vascular Association. This change aimed to increase flexibility in organizing academic activities and enhance communication and coordination with international counterparts.

Academic Activity

  1. The organization of Interhospital Vascular Conferences has increased from every three months in the initial phase to monthly meetings at present
  2. The organization of the Annual Vascular Meeting Program by the Thai Vascular Association. Started in 2001 (2547BE), held once a year to provide comprehensive knowledge of vascular surgery to general practitioners and general surgeons.
  3. The organization of the Advance course of Vascular Surgery. Started in 2019 (2562BE), held once a year to provide in-depth knowledge in vascular surgery  to general practitioners and vascular surgeons.
  4. The organization of  the Basic Course of Thai Venous Forum. Started in 2019 (2562BE) to provide comprehensive knowledge of venous surgery to general practitioners and general surgeons.
  5. The organization of theAdvanced Course of Thai Venous forum. Started in 2020 (2563BE) to provide in-depth knowledge in venous surgery  to general practitioners and vascular surgeons.

The International Academic Forum

  1. The collaboration in organizing conferences with the Royal College of Surgeons of Thailand started in 1997 (2540 BE), held once a year ever since, up to the present.
  2. The International Angiology Conference was held in 2005 (2548BE) at the Radisson Hotel in Bangkok. During that event, renowned vascular surgeons from the United States participated as keynote speakers, including Professor Emeritus Robert B. Rutherford, who pioneered the creation of Rutherford’s Textbook of Vascular Surgery, widely used as a reference in vascular surgery training worldwide. Additionally, Professor Vikrom Sottiurai, a Thai vascular surgeon from the University of Louisiana, shared valuable knowledge at the conference
  3. The organization of the 9th Annual Meeting of Asian Society for Vascular Surgery in 2008 (2551BE) at the Royal Orchid Sheraton Hotel in Bangkok.
  4. The organization of the 16th Annual Meeting of Asian Society for Vascular Surgery (ASVS2015) in 2015 (2558BE) at the Plaza Athenee Hotel in Bangkok.
  5. The collaboration in the Aortic Asia Symposiumwith theThe Society of Thoracic Surgeons of Thailand in 2016 (2559BE) at the Plaza Millennium Hilton in Bangkok.

Fellowship Training in Vascular Surgery

In 2005 (2548 BE), the Thai Vascular Association, in collaboration with the Royal College of Surgeons of Thailand, and the Medical Council of Thailand, developed a two-year of the Fellowship Training in Vascular Surgery. Trainees were required to complete the Residency Training in Surgery program and pass the certification examination. In the first year, two institutions, the Faculty of Medicine Siriraj Hospital and Ramathibodi Hospital, offered the training program. Subsequently, several other institutions opened additional training programs, resulting in a total of nine institutions offering vascular surgery residency training in Thailand, from the past until the present.

At present, there are a total of 104 vascular surgeons who have completed their residency training.

Participation in international conferences.

Thai Vascular Association have had the opportunity to present their works and participate in the international conferences such as VEITHsymposium in the United States, LINC in Germany, CLIC in Italy, Charing Cross Vascular Symposium in the United Kingdom, International Angiology in Australia, Endovascology in China, and Asia-Pacific Vascular Intervention Course (APVIC) in India.
